The churches of Christ Salute you (Romans 16:16) |
Where is your creed or statement of faith? This question is often asked of members of the church of Christ. The churches of Christ do not have a formal man made or written creed. We believe the Bible has been delivered to us by God because 2 Peter 1:21 tells us, "Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit." Because these men spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit, we accept the Bible as the word of God, "For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe" (1 Thessalonians 2:13). |

| Accepting the Bible as the word of God, we accept that, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16,17). We as followers of Christ do not need another document to guide us doctrinally nor do we need instruction from any other source than the Bible. The Bible further tells us, "as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue" (2 Peter 1:3). These verses tell us God has given us everything we need to get to heaven; when we follow creeds we are in essence saying the Scriptures are incomplete and we need further instruction. Let us remember in Revelation 22:18,19 we are told not to add to or take away from the word of God, and if we do there will be severe consequences. | ||||

Following the Bible alone will produce Christians only and only Christians. There is no such thing as hyphenated Christians in the Bible. There are only Christians. Man made creeds are divisive (1 Corinthians 1:10-17) and sinful (Matthew 15:8,9). We in the churches of Christ have no creed but Christ and no book but the Bible.
